I love the guys in the Kiley, they’re my brothers, but there’s something different having other women up there with you. It’s really empowering.

I think that country music as an art form is great because it is so American and it is so wrapped up with great, tragic but strong female voices and singers. There is such a strong female perspective in country music. Where in rock on the other hand, there are so few.

I just try to reach out to other female musicians as much as I can. I think it’s really important to support other girls and appreciate what they do and try to work with them.

I’m not necessarily coming from a religious standpoint, but I guess there is a lot of questioning in my songs. Sometimes people come to my shows and think I’m a Christian artist and they put their hands up in the air, like they do. But first of all I’m a Jewish girl from the valley, and I’m from Los Angeles. It’s funny to be misinterpreted.

All those Fleetwood Mac comparisons weren’t really appropriate. No sex, coke, or parties. I think it was the goji and kombuchas that did us in. If anything, there was too much healthy eating and not enough healthy dialogue.

The truth is, I turned myself into a fake pop star for Under the Blacklight. People like to think Warner Brothers molded us into this pop band, but that’s what we really wanted to do, and at the time I thought that is what I wanted for that record. I was very capable of singing pop songs and strutting around in hot pants. That’s one aspect of my personality. But do I think that personality best suits the songs I write? No way.

I think it’s cool to go into something with low expectations.

I was in a band with the worst 1990’s name of all time: Soul Fish. ‘Cause either of those words would make for a really bad band name, but those words together? And we were pretty much a Jimi Hendrix cover band. I was the singer.
